When students arrive at Españolé, they're excited to improve their Spanish skills. What they don't expect is how much they'll also learn just by living in Spain. Here are five everyday cultural surprises that many experience during their stay in Valencia, and later talk about with a smile:
Meal times. Forget dinner at 6 p.m. In Spain, it's normal to eat at 9:30 p.m. or even later. It feels unusual at first — then natural, then enjoyable.
The volume (and passion) when speaking Speaking loudly doesn't mean someone's upset — it means they're engaged! Emotion, hand gestures, laughter... it's all part of the conversation.
Physical closeness Two kisses on the cheek, close conversations, friendly touch — it may feel surprising at first, but quickly becomes a sign of warmth and connection.
Spontaneity Plans shift, things happen naturally. A casual walk turns into dinner. A short stay becomes a long one. Students learn to enjoy the flow.
Hand (and face!) gestures In Spain, people speak with their whole body. Most students end up using the same gestures without even noticing — and loving it.
